In recent years, in Sayulita and other Mexican beach towns, the harvesting of turtle eggs and taking of turtles for food has been supplanted, thankfully, by the nurturing of turtles and especially of their nests and eggs. In Sayulita and nearby San Pancho, citizen volunteers release baby turtles into the ocean on frequent occasions during the season; they welcome assistance, and even if you just come to watch, it’s a unique and fascinating thrill to witness dozens of baby turtle emerge from their eggs in the sand and scamper in slow motion to their homes in the surging waves.
